The sacred well Is Pirois

The sacred well Is Pirois is an archaeological monument, a sacred nuragic well located in the locality of Is Pirois.

The sacred well Is Pirois

The sacred well of Is Pirois is characterized by an intact pseudo-dome (tholos) and a second chamber, partly destroyed, above it.

It was discovered by chance following the construction of a stable a little further upstream from the sacred well and was excavated starting in 1982 by Maria Luisa Ferrarese Ceruti but the work remained unpublished due to the death of the archaeologist. In 2002, stabilization work was carried out by Donatella Salvi.

The area was placed under constraint and acquired by the Municipality of Villaputzu which follows its conservation and has planned further excavation campaigns. The monument has not been directly dated, but the similarity with other wells indicates its construction between the final Bronze Age and the early Iron Age, that is between 1200 and 720 BC.

Access Mode

Take the Santorgiu restaurant, located on the SS 125, as a reference. A little further north of it, on the right, you will find the indication for the well (the sign says “Tempio a pozzo”). Continue until you find a collapsed bridge. Cross the ford on the right (also passable with a small car but go slowly because there are stones – not advisable if it has rained) and, after crossing the river bed (in summer it is all dry), continue on the right, following the signs.

N.B.: do not follow Google Maps because it leads to private land!
